Nicole Fields

My name is Nicole, and my project will be examining the repercussions of pronatalism in feminist (demographic) dystopian fiction. More specifically, I will be studying three dystopian novels, written by and featuring women, where population decline is central to their plots-- The Handmaid's Tale, The Children of Men, and Before She Sleeps. I am interested in understanding how women in these novels are adversely affected by  attempts to repopulate and how these representations may reflect elements of contemporary society. My love for dystopian fiction stems from its ability to foresee and speculate exaggerated versions of real-world issues artistically and viscerally.

Outside of school, I am a homebody at heart. I love to cook and spend time with my family, friends, and my dog (mostly my dog). While I no longer play soccer myself, I do coach young players; I am especially passionate about fostering an empowering environment for young girls in hopes that they will gain the confidence to pursue their passions, whether that be in sports or elsewhere.

'One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.'
